WEBVTT - What's new in QuickField 6.6

00:00.000 --> 00:10.000
Hello, my name is Alex. I am support engineer in QuickField support team. Today we will speak about what is new in QuickField 6.6.

00:11.000 --> 00:17.000
The most prominent feature of QuickField 6.6 is new model editor.

00:17.000 --> 00:23.000
But first let me remind you what QuickField is for.

00:24.000 --> 00:37.000
QuickField is a finite element simulation software. QuickField is widely used in electrical engineering, manufacturing, biology and many other industries and research fields.

00:39.000 --> 00:55.000
There are DC, AC and transient packages to perform electric and magnetic analysis. And we hate steady-state and transient packages for heat transfer analysis. And a linear stress analysis package.

00:55.000 --> 01:01.000
It is also possible to perform multiphysic analysis by coupling different packages.

01:01.000 --> 01:13.000
For example, you can run electromagnetic analysis and calculate losses. Then pass losses to heat transfer analysis and calculate temperatures.

01:13.000 --> 01:23.000
Then you can pass temperatures and electromagnetic forces to mechanical problem to calculate stresses and deformations.

01:24.000 --> 01:32.000
The simulation workflow is straight forward: you construct geometry model or import geometry model.

01:33.000 --> 01:39.000
Then you assign labels to objects. For each label you assign physical properties.

01:39.000 --> 01:45.000
Then QuickField runs the analysis and presents you simulation result.

01:36.000 --> 01:58.000
QuickField 6.6 features a brand-new Model Editor. Let's start QuickField and have a look at new Model Editor.

02:00.000 --> 02:06.000
Here is QuickField 6.6. Let's create new problem.

02:06.000 --> 02:09.000
Problem name is power line.

02:12.000 --> 02:13.000
Next.

02:13.000 --> 02:14.000
Finish.

02:16.000 --> 02:24.000
Here is geometry model editor window. You can draw geometry model here or import geometry model from CAD system.

02:25.000 --> 02:30.000
To draw a model you should switch to Insert mode.

02:30.000 --> 02:48.000
Grid makes creation of model vertices and edges easier and helps to check correctness of the model. You can switch off the grid and control coordinates in the status bar.

02:50.000 --> 02:55.000
Okay, now I will draw horizontal line.

02:55.000 --> 03:03.000
Click and drag. Hold the SHIFT button pressed to make perfect horizontal line.

03:05.000 --> 03:14.000
Okay. Next I will add a vertex here - double click the left mouse button.

03:15.000 --> 03:24.000
Line represents the surface of the earth and the vertex represents power line conductor.

03:25.000 --> 03:37.000
I should also add the air. In fact QuickField cannot calculate field distribution in the infinitively large space. So I should draw an external boundary.

03:47.000 --> 04:03.000
Well, I didn't succeed in drawing perfect square. Let's switch on the grid, and set the cell size to be 0.1 m.

04:04.000 --> 04:09.000
Okay. Now I will drag elements. Switch to Select mode.

04:09.000 --> 04:21.000
Click to select the vertex, press and hold Alt key. And I will drag this vertex here.

04:21.000 --> 04:28.000
I will drag this vertex here, here and here.

04:29.000 --> 04:38.000
Okay, now I have a perfect rectangle. next I should assign labels to distinguish one geometric object from another.

04:38.000 --> 04:46.000
Click to select and type label name here. This is 'air'.

04:46.000 --> 04:53.000
Click here. This is earth.

04:55.000 --> 05:00.000
Click here. This is conductor.

05:02.000 --> 05:13.000
Okay. A new feature of QuickField 6.6 is that objects are now highlighted when you hover.

05:14.000 --> 05:30.000
And moreover you can see the object label in status bar. Edge 'earth', block 'air' and the vertex 'conductor'.

05:30.000 --> 05:37.000
So now you can navigate through the geometry model comfortably.

05:37.000 --> 05:47.000
Okay, let's assign material properties. When I click the label in the tree - the corresponding object is selected.

05:47.000 --> 05:52.000
And if I double-click the label name I can specify physical properties.

05:52.000 --> 05:55.000
Electric permittivity of air is 1.

05:55.000 --> 06:02.000
For the 'earth' I specify zero electric potential.

06:02.000 --> 06:09.000
And the conductor electric potential is 1 kV. Okay.

06:09.000 --> 06:14.000
The last step before we can run the analysis is to build the finite element mesh.

06:14.000 --> 06:19.000
Just press this button and the mesh will be constructed.

06:19.000 --> 06:23.000
QuickField adjusts mesh elements size automatically.

06:23.000 --> 06:32.000
For large objects we have large elements, for small objects - we will have small elements.

06:32.000 --> 06:48.000
You can adjust the size manually. Click any object and specify the size. For example, 0.1 m.

06:50.000 --> 07:00.000
Please note these blue circles. They indicate in which vertices the manual mesh value is set and the magnitude of the value.

07:00.000 --> 07:06.000
In our case the circle radius is 0.1 m.

07:06.000 --> 07:13.000
Well for the conductor I would like to set the mesh spacing to be 0.01 meter.

07:13.000 --> 07:20.000
Okay. Now if we zoom in, you will see a small circle here.

07:21.000 --> 07:33.000
Again, this is new feature of QuickField 6.6. You can zoom with the mouse wheel.

07:31.000 --> 07:35.000
And, instead of the scroll bar you can pan.

07:36.000 --> 07:44.000
Sometimes while editing geometry model you might decide to undo some action.

07:44.000 --> 07:50.000
We added undo and redo buttons to the toolbar.

07:52.000 --> 07:59.000
Okay. Now let's build the finite element mesh and run the analysis.

08:02.000 --> 08:11.000
Here You can see the electric field distribution around the high voltage conductor placed above the earth surface.

08:14.000 --> 08:20.000
Sometimes you would like to get a picture of the model to put it in the report.

08:21.000 --> 08:35.000
I believe you do not need to see the mesh - hide the mesh, and you do not need to see grid - hide the grid. And I will hide these blue circles.

08:36.000 --> 08:46.000
Now you can copy it. But if you copy the picture its size is limited by the dimensions of the screen.

08:46.000 --> 08:57.000
If you need to get high resolution picture you can use Export picture. Here you can choose the file type.

08:57.000 --> 08:59.000
And you can choose the scale factor.

09:03.000 --> 09:11.000
As you see with new model editor geometric editing now can be performed intuitively and comfortably.

09:03.000 --> 09:18.000
But most significantly, all picture displays now respond immediately to every user action!

09:10.000 --> 09:32.000
