Bushing optimization - QuickField simulation example
Engineering question
How to find electric field in pass-through insulators?
Answer
Set up an axisymmetric QuickField Electrostatics problem for a pass-through insulator structure and evaluate electric field distribution from computed field results.
Typical applications
pass-through insulators, wall bushings, enclosure feedthrough insulators

Simulation problem
Problem TypeAxisymmetric problem of electrostatics.
Geometry
Given
Relative permittivity of ceramic ε = 2.4;
HV conductor potential U = 10 kV
Plate potential 0 V
Task
Determine the optimal design of the pass-through insulator.
Solution
Three cases were simulated to compare the electric field stress values in the air and in the bushing material. Designs include the cylindrical bushing, bushing with a conductive layer on the lateral surface, and a bushing with a conductive layer and a conical tip.
Results
Electric potential distribution in the bushing.
- Cylindrical bushing
- Pass through insulator
- Cone bushing
