Electric shunt - QuickField simulation example
Engineering question
How to find current distribution in electric shunts?
Engineering answer
Set up a 3D QuickField DC Conduction problem for an electric shunt conductor and evaluate current distribution from computed field results.
Typical applications
precision current shunts, DC current sensors, calibration shunt resistors

Simulation problem
Problem Type3D problem of DC conduction.
Geometry
Given
Electric conductivity of metal σ = 56 MS/m;
Electric current I = 100 A.
Task
Calculate the voltage drop V in the electric shunt.
Solution
One of the terminals is grounded. The task is to find the electric potential of the second terminal with known electric current.
Results
Potential difference between the terminals is 2.1 mV.
Current density distribution in the electric shunt is shown below.
