Add-in for Harmonic Analysis

This add-in allows you to calculate and view harmonics (that is, phases and amplitudes for Fourier series) for any displayed quantity related to the currently selected contour.

How to start Harmonics add-in:

• Open the postprocessor window

• Specify the contour

• In the View menu or the context (right mouse button) menu click Harmonics....

Viewing harmonics

You can choose one of the following view modes:

• Amplitudes and phases plot
  In this view mode phases and amplitudes are displayed as small yellow circles at the plot.

  To get more information about specific harmonic, click at the corresponding circle. Detailed information will be displayed at the bottom line of the plot.

  You can also move the cursor over the circle and wait a second. Detailed information about the harmonic will be displayed as a tooltip.

• Amplitudes plot
  It is sometimes convenient to view amplitudes only, without phases. In this case you can use this view.

• Table
  In this mode, information is presented as a table with three columns: harmonics number, phase and amplitude.

• X-Y plot for approximation
  In this mode, you can view the X-Y plots of the original function and its approximation with several first harmonics. You can specify the number of harmonics to use in approximation harmonics to be used in the approximation.
  This mode is convenient for visual estimation whether the harmonic approximation is good enough.

View, value and contour settings:

• For
  To set value for harmonic analysis, press the button next to the For field. Value dialog will appear.

• View
  Use this combo box to change the view mode. (See above for the list of view modes).

• Contour corresponds to
  It is sometimes convenient to assume that current contour corresponds to the part of the function period, not to the whole period.
  Using the Contour dialog, you can set that that the contour corresponds to the half period of the function. In this case you should specify how does the second half period correspond to the first one.

  To change these settings, press the small button next to the Contour corresponds to field. Contour dialog will appear.

More options:

• You can copy selected harmonic or all harmonics together to the clipboard and paste it to another application. To do it, click right button at the harmonics plot and choose Copy Selected Harmonic or Copy All Harmonics from the context menu.

  Information is copied in the text format, with values separated by tabs. This assures convenient pasting to Word or Excel documents.

• You can save harmonics to the text file. For doing that, click right mouse button over harmonics plot and choose Save Harmonics... from the context menu. Information about all harmonics will be saved.

• You can copy plot picture to the clipboard and paste it to another application like Paint, Word, etc. Click right mouse button over the harmonics plot and choose Copy Picture from the context menu.

• You can save plot picture to the picture file. Click right mouse button over the harmonics plot and choose Save Picture from the context menu. Picture will be saved in the extended metafile format (.emf).
