Cable design and software simulation
Cable in Electrical Engineering means several wires, bonded or connected together to create a single assembly.
Cables are used to transmit the electrical power (power cables) or electrical signals between devices (signal cables). Each of these groups may be further divided, and in fact there are thousands of different cable designs for various applications. But they all include one or many conductors, surrounded by insulation, and other components - like shields for controlling electromagnetic fields, and armor to increase the mechanical strength - which are used to improve specific cable features.
Cable design is dictated by parameters which are most important for specific applications:
- Power cable design provides large current carrying capability, minimal power losses and good mechanical strength. Engineers, involved in the power cable design require analysis of the low frequency electromagnetic fields, temperature distribution and mechanical stresses.
- Signal cables are designed to minimize signals distortion and electromagnetic interaction between the separate wires. Therefore the signal cable design may require more detailed electromagnetic field analysis in wider frequency range, and include calculation of the capacitances, inductances, impedances and other parameters.
